RAPID CITY, S.D. – South Dakota wildlife officials are reporting a sharp increase in deer deaths linked to epizootic hemorrhagic disease, or EHD, a viral illness spread by biting midges.
Game, Fish and Parks says more than 400 deer deaths have been reported this year, more than double the total reported just a month ago. Most cases involve white-tailed deer, which are especially vulnerable to the disease.
In response, the state has reduced hunting opportunities in several affected areas, including removing some youth and mentored deer licenses and modifying statewide archery regulations. Officials are also offering full license refunds to hunters in 16 counties along the Missouri River corridor.
Wildlife experts say warm, dry conditions followed by periods of rainfall likely contributed to this year’s outbreak. The disease typically subsides after a hard freeze kills the insects that spread it.
Game, Fish and Parks is asking the public to continue reporting sick or dead deer as officials monitor the outbreak and assess impacts on deer populations across the state.
