SOUTH DAKOTA – Nearly 6,000 South Dakotans are currently registered as federal-only voters, meaning they can vote for federal offices but not in state or local races unless they meet new voter registration requirements.
According to a report from South Dakota Searchlight, the number of federal-only voters has nearly quadrupled since May following the implementation of new state laws requiring proof of U.S. citizenship and additional residency documentation for some voters.
One affected voter told reporters he was unaware of his status until contacted and said he believes the restrictions amount to voter suppression. Under the law, voters who do not provide accepted citizenship documents can still vote in federal elections but are excluded from voting on races for governor, state lawmakers, constitutional amendments, and local offices.
Supporters of the law say it helps protect election integrity, while critics argue eligible voters may be disenfranchised through confusion, paperwork errors, or lack of notice.
State election officials are encouraging voters to check their registration status with their county auditor before the voter registration deadline to ensure they receive the ballot they expect in November.
