BOX ELDER, S.D. — Douglas Middle School physical education teacher Nick Knutson has been named the 2026 SHAPE SD Middle School Physical Education Teacher of the Year, recognizing his dedication to student health, fitness, and achievement.
Knutson has spent 35 years at Douglas Middle School, including 30 years teaching seventh-grade social studies before moving into physical education five years ago.
School leaders praised Knutson for his commitment to students and his ability to build strong relationships while promoting physical fitness and healthy lifestyles. Principal Sean Gholson said the award reflects Knutson’s dedication to student well-being and his success in helping students meet state physical education standards.
Knutson was nominated by fellow teacher Jace Caldwell, who credited him with creating an inclusive environment where all students have opportunities to succeed. Caldwell said Knutson inspires students through leadership, encouragement, and a focus on teamwork, character development, and perseverance.
SHAPE SD, the Society of Health and Physical Educators of South Dakota, promotes healthy living and lifelong physical activity across the state. The organization presents annual awards to educators who demonstrate excellence in health and physical education.
School officials say Knutson’s impact extends far beyond the gym, helping generations of students build confidence and develop skills that will benefit them throughout their lives.
