RAPID CITY, S.D. – Visitors to the Wyoming side of the Black Hills National Forest will soon have more flexibility when recreating outdoors.
Beginning at midnight on October 23rd, the Bearlodge and Hell Canyon Ranger Districts will move from stricter fire restrictions to Stage 1 fire restrictions. The change will allow campfires in permanent Forest Service fire rings located at developed campgrounds, picnic areas, and recreation sites.
However, officials say several restrictions will remain in effect. Charcoal fires are still prohibited outside approved areas, and smoking is limited to designated locations. Certain restrictions on welding, torch use, and explosives also remain in place.
Forest Service officials say decisions on fire restrictions are based on current fire danger, available firefighting resources, and conditions in surrounding areas.
The Stage 1 restrictions are expected to remain in place through December 15th, unless conditions improve and officials decide to lift them sooner.
