RAPID CITY, S.D. – Drivers in western South Dakota can expect increased enforcement next month as the South Dakota Highway Patrol conducts sobriety checkpoints aimed at reducing impaired driving.
Troopers plan to hold checkpoints in 15 counties statewide during November, including Lawrence, Pennington, and Custer counties in western South Dakota. The effort will be coordinated with local law enforcement agencies.
Officials say the checkpoints are designed to improve roadway safety, deter impaired driving, and identify drivers who may be under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Additional checkpoints are planned in Beadle, Brule, Codington, Edmunds, Hanson, Hughes, Jones, Lincoln, Minnehaha, Moody, Roberts, and Union counties.
The Highway Patrol is reminding motorists to plan if they intend to drink by arranging for a sober driver, using a rideshare service, or finding another safe way home. Officials say the goal is to prevent crashes and keep South Dakota roads safe throughout the holiday season.
