RAPID CITY, S.D. – As Halloween celebrations approach, the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office, Rapid City Police Department, and state and federal highway safety officials are reminding drivers that “Buzzed Driving Is Drunk Driving.”
Authorities say alcohol-impaired driving remains a major cause of traffic fatalities. Nationwide, one person was killed every 44 minutes in a drunk-driving crash during 2024. Officials also note that Halloween can be especially dangerous, with 201 people killed in alcohol-related crashes nationwide during Halloween nights between 2020 and 2024.
Safety officials are urging anyone planning to drink to arrange a sober ride home before heading out, whether through a designated driver, taxi or rideshare service. They also encourage people to take the keys away from friends who have been drinking and help them find a safe ride.
With more pedestrians, children and families expected to be out on Halloween night, law enforcement is asking everyone to remain alert and make responsible choices behind the wheel.
Officials say the message is simple: If you’ve been drinking, don’t drive. Drive 100 percent sober and help make Halloween a safe holiday for everyone.
