RAPID CITY, S.D. – Red Ribbon Week is underway in Rapid City, with schools, community organizations and city leaders joining a nationwide effort to promote drug awareness and prevention.
Mayor Jason Salamun has officially proclaimed October 26 through 31 as Red Ribbon Week in Rapid City, encouraging residents to participate in prevention education activities and make a visible commitment to a drug-free community. In the proclamation, Salamun noted that alcohol and drug abuse remains a serious concern and emphasized the importance of unified community efforts to reduce drug demand through education and awareness.
This year’s Red Ribbon Week theme is “Make a Difference, Be a Hero, Stay Drug Free.” The campaign is supported locally by the Rapid City Optimist Club, schools, law enforcement, businesses, faith organizations, and other community groups.
Activities include a kickoff event Monday afternoon at the Minneluzahan Senior Center, where Mayor Salamun will present the city’s official proclamation. Dinosaur Park’s iconic “Deano” will be illuminated in red throughout the week, and the mayor is also scheduled to speak at a Red Ribbon Week assembly at Pinedale Elementary School on Thursday.
The week’s events conclude on Halloween with “Spooky Skate” at Roosevelt Park Ice Arena. The free event will feature skating, pizza, games, costume contests, and prizes for participating families.
Red Ribbon Week began in 1985 and remains the nation’s largest drug prevention and awareness campaign.
