RAPID CITY, S.D. – A Rapid City teenager has been sentenced for the December 2024 shooting death of 16-year-old Kade Potter of Box Elder. On Friday, Judge Jeffrey Connolly sentenced Isiah Taha to 10 years in the South Dakota State Penitentiary, suspending four of those years. Taha will also receive credit for the 692 days he has already served in the Pennington County Jail.
Taha pleaded guilty in September to second-degree manslaughter, a reduced charge from first-degree manslaughter. Prosecutors said Taha and Potter were inside a vehicle near Deadwood Avenue and Omaha Street when Taha, who was reportedly highly intoxicated, was handling a firearm that discharged and fatally struck Potter.
During sentencing, Potter’s family asked the court to impose the maximum penalty, while Taha’s attorney argued for a lighter sentence, citing his acceptance of responsibility and remorse for the shooting.
