KYLE, S.D. – Residents of Kyle on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation are coming together to support a beloved community member after he was seriously injured in an attack outside his home.
Sixty-eight-year-old Joe Martinez, known throughout the community as “Joe Blow,” remains hospitalized in Rapid City after undergoing emergency surgery. Family members say Martinez went outside to investigate noises near his home when he was attacked, suffering multiple injuries, including a stab wound. Authorities continue to investigate the incident.
Martinez is well known in Kyle for his kindness and service to others. A polio survivor, he is often seen riding his bicycle through town and has spent years repairing bicycles for local children at no cost.
Community members have quickly stepped in to help during his recovery. Neighbors are caring for his pets, while a grassroots fundraising effort has been launched to provide winter clothing, pet supplies, bicycle repair tools, and other necessities to help Martinez when he returns home.
Organizers say the outpouring of support reflects the strong sense of community in Kyle and the impact Martinez has had on generations of residents. Donations can be made through an online fundraiser, and physical donations are being accepted at the Lakota Waldorf School.
