RAPID CITY, S.D. – The Pennington County Democratic Party has filed a campaign finance complaint with the South Dakota Secretary of State’s Office, requesting a review of a contribution made to the Taffy Howard for SD campaign committee.
According to the complaint, filed Wednesday by Pennington County Democratic Party Chairwoman Ranee Haglund, the campaign reported receiving a $5,063 contribution from Southeastern Strategies. The complaint asks state officials to determine whether the contribution complies with South Dakota campaign finance laws governing donations from business entities to legislative candidates.
Haglund argues the reported contribution may exceed the state’s annual contribution limit and is requesting that the Secretary of State review campaign finance records, determine whether the contribution was properly classified, and decide whether any corrective action is necessary.
In a statement, Haglund said the complaint is focused on transparency and accountability and is intended to allow state election officials to determine whether campaign finance laws were properly followed.
The complaint does not allege a proven violation but asks the Secretary of State’s Campaign Finance Division to examine the facts and make an official determination. State officials have not yet announced any findings related to the filing.
