RAPID CITY, S.D. – The Pennington County Sheriff’s Office is expanding its crime-fighting capabilities with the addition of two new K-9 drug detection teams.
The new units, funded through South Dakota Attorney General drug control funds, are now state-certified and already assisting law enforcement throughout the county. Sheriff Brian Mueller says the dogs will serve as a force multiplier in the fight against illegal drugs and will also help with missing person searches.
Deputy Phillip Rivera and his K-9 partner Tiger, a German Shorthaired Pointer, and Deputy Travis Leeson with Ranger, a Yellow Labrador, will be introduced to students at New Underwood and Hill City schools on November fourth. Officials say the school visits are designed to help build positive relationships with students while promoting a drug-free future.
The Box Elder Police Department is also adding a K-9 unit through the same funding program.
