SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – A family displaced from the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation is asking for community support as their young son continues a remarkable recovery from a devastating gunshot injury.
Steven Martin was inside his family’s home when a stray bullet pierced a wall and struck him in the head. Doctors initially doubted he would survive and warned he might never walk, talk, or eat on his own again. Despite those odds, his parents say Steven continues to overcome milestone after milestone.
The road to recovery has been difficult. Steven suffered multiple strokes following the shooting, leaving him paralyzed on his left side and requiring extensive medical care, specialized equipment, and ongoing therapy. His condition also requires a low-stimulation environment, prompting the family to relocate to Sioux Falls to be closer to specialized pediatric care.
The move, combined with medical expenses not fully covered by insurance, has created significant financial hardship for the family. Steven’s father is also battling cancer while working odd jobs to help make ends meet.
The Martins have relaunched a GoFundMe campaign to help cover medical supplies, specialized nutrition, transportation, and living expenses as Steven continues his recovery.
His parents say every day brings new challenges, but also new signs of progress from a child they describe as nothing short of a miracle.
