RAPID CITY, S.D. – Rapid City’s public transit system continues to see strong growth, with new figures showing ridership is up significantly compared to five years ago.
According to the Rapid Transit System’s October report, more than 27,300 passenger trips were recorded during the month, a three percent increase over October of last year. The total also represents a 57 percent jump from October 2021, when just over 17,400 trips were logged.
A major contributor to that growth is the Youth Ride Free program, which recorded more than 8,500 passenger trips in October. Youth ridership increased 12 percent compared to last year and has more than doubled since 2021.
RTS Manager Megan Gould says the steady increase shows more residents are choosing public transportation to get to work, school, and community activities.
Rapid Transit System has served the Rapid City area since 1992, and officials say ridership trends continue to demonstrate growing demand for public transportation throughout the community.
