SPEARFISH, S.D. – Spearfish could see about 400 new apartments become available over the next year as city leaders work to address housing needs and support continued growth.
Mayor John Senden shared the outlook during the annual State of the Community luncheon, saying the additional housing will complement the planned Sky Ridge workforce housing development, which is expected to be completed in 2027.
Senden says expanding housing options is a key part of retaining graduates from Black Hills State University and helping them build careers in the community after earning their degrees.
The mayor noted that rising construction costs remain one of the biggest challenges to keeping pace with growth, while the city continues planning infrastructure improvements over the next several years.
Meanwhile, Black Hills State University reported a five-year high enrollment of more than 3,500 students this fall. University President Steve Elliott says the school is working closely with employers to prepare students for careers in fields such as finance, agribusiness, criminal justice, education, and health care.
Community leaders say continued investment in housing, education, and workforce development will be critical as Spearfish continues to grow.
